Protests in Yemen turn deadly

Sanaa, Yemen (CNN) -- Five people were killed in clashes between rival forces in the Yemeni capital Sanaa as nationwide protests against the government continued Wednesday.

Of the dead in Sanaa, two were loyal to Gen. Ali Muhsen Al-Ahmar, who has defected to the opposition, a government security official said. The other three were regime soldiers.

Government forces were sending in armored vehicles as reinforcements to the demonstrations in Sanaa, the official said.

Thousands of Yemenis took to the streets in Aden, Taiz, Hodeida and Dhamar.

In addition to the dead in Sanaa, two people were killed in Aden, according to medical staff at the city's Naqeeb Hospital.

Meanwhile, Yemen's attorney general threatened to resign unless the government went after the killers of anti-government protesters last month.

Abdullah Al-Olufi said "those who were responsible for killing almost 60 protesters and injuring hundreds of others should be identified and brought to justice soon."

"If the security authorities don't identify those responsible for the massacre including those who were masked, I will step down," Al-Olufi said as public and external pressure mounts on President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down.

Protests erupted in Yemen this week despite an attempt by Persian Gulf nations to decrease tensions.

The Gulf Cooperation Council has urged Saleh to transfer powers to his vice president, a move that falls short with the protesters who returned to the streets for marches. Opposition leaders vowed not to back down.

The Joint Meeting Parties bloc, Yemen's largest opposition group, said the Gulf initiative "does not clearly state that Saleh must step down and only focuses on Saleh's transferring power."

"We all know the VP is not strong and will never be able to tell Saleh no, even if all his powers are transferred," said senior bloc official Hasan Zaid.

Saleh, in power since 1978, said he welcomes the council's efforts to help resolve the political crisis in his country. He has said he intends to step down but only under a peaceful and constitutional transition process. He has already promised not to run in the next round of elections.

The United States, which has been allied with the Saleh government in its fight against al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, has welcomed past Gulf council initiatives to resolve the crisis in Yemen.

FASHION 2010

2010 will be an exciting year for fashion; experts predict that we'll emerge from the global financial crisis and, as a result, we can expect to see a new standard of fashion rise up. Introducing 2010 fashion trends. Classically inspired but with a serious infusion of the sex and skin, this is what we'll be wearing in 2010.
Keep up to date with what you'll be wearing for Spring/Summer 2010. From hot pants to knee high socks, fierce warriors to football players; we look at key inspirations, colours, cuts, and styles. We also give you plenty of picture inspiration, and tips on how to wear each trend.
The Autumn (Fall) /Winter seasons are our favourite; extra layers mean extra clothes, mean a more refined look. Join us as we look forward to the end of 2010, the cooler weather, and all the layering and extra detail it allows us to work into our wardrobes. We'll bring you the key looks and influences that will form the basis for your revamped look for the season...

Hotpants and boy shorts

Hot pants & boy shorts

If ever there was a time to hit the gym, it's this Spring. Hemlines have crept up to shorter than short; in fact reaching the negative. Hot pants, boy shorts, and tap pants are all variations on this shorter-than-short style, which in many cases reveal more than just one's legs.

knee high and over knee socks

Knee high & over the knee socks

Knee high socks - as well as over-the-knee and thigh high socks - are back as a trend, and the options on how to wear them are many. From the sporty to the sparkly, to layerings of socks over tights; a great pair of socks can add volumes to an outfit.

striped clothing fashion trend

Stripes for Summer

Stripes may be eternal, but there are ways to bring them into line with the perfect on-trend Summer look this year. Make stripes a dominant feature of your outfit and you're well on the way. From nautical colours to clashing with other prints

Warrior fashion trend

Future warrior

The military and tribal trends collide to become this fierce fashion trend. Ancient civilisations come to life in leather tunics, metal plating, and war paint. Unequivocally fearless and with room for endless creativity, the main criteria for the modern warrior is confidence.

Thigh high split dress

High dress splits

How to pull off the ultimate in sexy without reaching for the micro-mini? Add a long dress with a high split to your Spring wardrobe. From Versace's knock-out gowns to Lanvin's elegantly draping numbers, we look at numerous ways to rock a high dress split.

Sporty clothing

Sportswear: sporty clothing

Sportswear takes on a whole new level of cool when it hits trend status in 2010. Football inspirations turn tomboy chic to sexy yet effortless looks; while Bond girl scuba inspired clothing is the pinnacle of sporty bombshell. Dance and 20s inspired tennis looks also feature in our comprehensive look at sporty clothing in 2010.

Sci fi and futurism

Sci-fi and Futurism

The dawn of a new decade brings forward-projecting thoughts which reflect in many a designer's work in 2010. From the dark depths of dystopia to the possibilities of evolution, sci-fi finds its way into fashion in various forms, as do re-interpretations of traditional futurist concepts.

playsuits and rompers

Jumpsuits & playsuits

Every so often, one-piece styles of clothing have a revival. What started with bodysuits and leotards is now becoming a fully-fledged trend towards jumpsuits, playsuits, and rompers. As a unique style for Spring 2010, they won't be for everyone, but they will offer more options than you'd think.

military clothing

Military fashion

If you've kept a keen on on past year's fashion trends military fashion will be nothing new to you. Yet, after two years of being the dominant fashion trend fashionable military clothing is evolving. Gone are the ostentatious reproductions of 18th and 19th century military uniforms. What replaces them though?

Patterned pants

Patterned & printed pants

No longer must we stick to boring block colours on our lower half, for all varieties of printed pants have made their way onto the Spring runways. Whether floral, striped, abstract, bold or subdued... patterns on pants are giving us new bold wardrobe options for the warmer months.

Sheer fabric

See-through and sheer fabrics trend

In Spring and Summer fashion tends to get a little more revealing; we blame it on the heat, and one's desire to show off. So in 2010 turn to the sheer / see-through trend to keep you cool yet sexy. 2010's sheer pieces are a mixture of the soft and feminine, to the opposite extremes of the hardcore sex-kitten.

Boyfriend blazer fashion trend

Boyfriend blazers

Continuing to be a wardrobe staple for Spring/Summer 2010, the "boyfriend" blazer is a simple way to look chic whether on a fresh Spring day or mild a Summer's night. A slightly oversized jacket or blazer, sleeves rolled up, is the pinnacle of relaxed cool.

Women's Accessory Trends for Spring 2010

Two accessory trends have caught our eye for Spring 2010: the latter is more suited to print (and the more confident fashioniser) while the former is the toned down version perfect for everyday wear.

Hair bows

Bow headbands

Oversized and attention grabbing, bows in 2010 come in many styles and forms. They can be cutesy or pretty, without a doubt - but there's also room for attitude and quirkiness too. Marc by Marc Jacobs, Luella, and Temperley all sported bows on their Spring 2010 runways.

Bunny Ears fashion trend

Bunny ears

Headbands take a quirky turn with this unique micro-trend. Bunny ears, Mickey Mouse ears, and oversized bows are all styles which fit this vintage-sex-kitten meets sugar sweet girl-next-door look. This trend is a definite favourite for editorials and shoots; but that doesn't mean it can't work on the streets.

women's sock garters

Sock garters

Traditionally the realm of men and men alone, the women's dandy trend brings with it opportunity to add sock garters into your Spring accessories repertoire. Feminise them with heels, or keep them masculine with lace-up flats; or go for a sporty-chic option.

Women's Swimwear Trends for Spring 2010

Bikinis 2010

2010 bikinis and swimwear

Find out what swimwear you'll be wearing when you hit the beach this Summer with our Bikinis 2010 trends guide. Which monikinis should you be wearing? And what style of bikinis? And which designer is making the sexiest, must-have pieces?

Denim Jeans Trends for Spring 2010

Torn denim

Ripped jeans and torn denim trend

Ripped denim burst back on the scene with a horde of sexed-up editorial shoots and celebrity sightings, as well as runway pieces. And while things have moved on to a more refined aesthetic, you don't need to throw out your shredded shorts and slashed-up jeans just yet. Ripped denim in 2010 still offers many variations for Summer.

Patched denim fashion trend

Patched jeans

We've seen jeans go from ripped to torn to downright shredded; so what can you possibly do next? Patch them of course! It's not for everyone, but its an option that's gaining traction. Patched jeans work well as skinnies, or try patched denim flares for a revival of 70s chic.

Other Trends

2010 hair trends

2010 hair trends

To describe this as a hair trend report is an understatement. With every key hair cut, hairstyle, and hair colour trend for 2010 described and photographed, this is the one article you must read to stay in fashion in 2010.

Spring/Summer 2010 Colour Trends

Spring Summer 2010 color

Spring/Summer 2010 Color Trends

With the continuation of the global financial crisis one can expect subdued colour trends from Spring/Summer 2010. Interfiliere have released their interpretation of the season's palette which we're pleased to say at least provides a vast array of colours, all with different, if somewhat earthy, tones.

Men's fashion moves slower than women's, but that doesn't mean that a season doesn't have a distinct look, nor that there aren't overarching themes from the year that can be worked into a wardrobe: after all, fashion is a constant evolution. For Autumn / Fall 2010 men's fashion will continue its drive towards the classics, with everything from military to suiting evolving

Picking a new suit is never an easy task; there's the cut, the fabric and the quality all to worry about. Though men's fashion trends change at a slow pace, and suits slowest of all, 2009 and 2010 will see a major move away from the monochromatic skinny-boy suit to something a lot more masculine and adventurous. But don't worry, the slim cuts aren't going anywhere.

Quick make-up TIPS

Quick yet perfect makeup - is it possible to look your best and be ready to go within 20 minutes?

Stress-free mornings are few and far-between.The time between the alarm clock ringing and getting into the office or out on your first errand of the day seems like no time at all. It's filled with waking, washing, dressing and feeding children, dressing yourself, breakfast (if you are lucky), locating car keys, homework, backpacks and breifcases.

Of course we try to be as well-prepared as possible. Lunches made the night before, clothes chosen and laid out ready for everyone, shoes shined, backpacks pre-packed, handbag loaded with the days essentials and plenty of gas in the car.

But it's our face we can't do before hand. And it's the one thing that really notices if you try to rush.

Avoiding makeup altogether would be the easy way out, but there are few women these days who like to start their day with a bare face.

Makeup makes us look better and it also helps protects our skin from environmental hazzards, and helps us look healthy and radiant. Most makeup products these days are also skin care products that actually work to look after our skin throughout the day.

Not only do these products protect, some actually help renew skin and reverse existing environmental damage, age spots and wrinkles. When you add up all the benefits, wearing makeup is caring for your skin.

And if it's only 20 minutes we have to spare for ourselves each morning, there is a way to make every minute count and start out each day looking your best. Here's how:

Cleanse and lightly apply your favorite moisturizer mixed with a dab of glowtion - that is a skin illuminator designed to make you glow but not sparkle. They are many out there - Revlon for example make a great one at a decent price.

Apply a fluid foundation with your fingertips and blend around jaw line.

Press powder into your skin with puff, and brush off excess with a brush. This gives your makeup the staying power it needs for a whole day.

Use a squirt of eye drops in the morning, to instantly brighten your sleepy eyes. Did you also know that eye drops applied over a pimple before you makeup reduces the redness instantly?

Use a powder shadow smeared along your lash lines with soft sponge applicator for a soft, but defined day look.

Apply one coat of lashing-plumping mascara.

Brush your eyebrows into shape, and use a soft pencil to quickly define them if needed.

Smile big and apply your blusher to the fattest part of your cheek with a big brush, slightly and lightly extending the color towards your ear. Go easy, you don't want clown cheeks. Choosing a sheer color with light reflecting particles will help avoid this.

Apply one coat of colored lip gloss for soft, natural lips with a healthy shine.

If you've run out of your usual concealer, use some of the dried up foundation in the bottom of the bottle, it covers up and matches your foundation perfectly. Remember, if you make a make-up mistake and your time is of the essence, just dip a cotton bud in your liquid foundation and wipe away the mistake.

If your hair is a wreck then try holding your head upside down and brushing vigorously. Apply a dollop of hair wax rubbed between palms and loosley pull back hair and fasten with your favorite clips.

This easy makeup will give you a flawless, light finish for day. You're ready to drive the kids to school, run your errands or call into the office before a game of golf.

Home Manicures & Pedicures

Beautiful hands and feet are comforting to have, but are sometimes hard to come by. Spending hours at the nail salon having your tips buffed, wrapped, and polished until they gleam may sound glamorous. But in the real world, who has the time? the thing is, just because you are short on time doesn’t mean you should ignore your nails. Check out these tips on how to keep your hands and feet beautiful without spending huge amounts of money and time.

It is important to have healthy nails. The color of your nails is an indicator of your general health. Your nails are part of your body too so you must take good care of them. Here are a few tips on how to take care of your nails.

Healthy nails are transparent and look pink in color as a result of the blood beneath them. If you wear nail polish on a regular basis then, take them off for a day or two every week, in order to let your nails breath.Add shine to your nails by massaging coconut oil or warm castor oil on them.

If you do not like nail polish then apply dry soap to your nails and buff or use lemon peel for a similar result.

Dip a cotton tipped swab in hydrogen peroxide to clean under the nails and whiten them. Before giving yourself a manicure, dip your nails in a cup of warm water with one tablespoon of lemon juice. Put your fingertips in half a lemon and twist your finger back and froth to clean the cuticles and nails.

Home Manicure And Pedicure Tips

Like the nails on your hand, the nails on your feet too need to be taken care of. You can give yourself a pedicure at home. Remove old nail polish completely. Using cotton balls leaves traces of cotton on your nails try using cotton bands instead. Soak the cotton band with acetone remover and remove the old polish. If the color is not coming off the press the cotton on to the nail and let it soak for a while.

It is always best to use high quality clippers to cut your toenails. Cut your nails straight across, leaving about 1/8 inch of length. Do not let your nail extend over the tip of your toe.

For a soft square shape, file the nail around the corners in one direction. Use Emory boards and not metal files, as metal files rip nails. The smoother surface is for smoothing the nail edge while the coarser surface id for shortening and shaping nails. Fill a big flat bottom bowl with warm water. Add bath salts, aromatherapy oils or Epsom salts and let your feet soak for 15 minutes. The more calloused your feet are the longer they need to stay soaked. Add about quarter cup of milk to the warm water. lactic acid in the milk loosens dead skin.

Apply cuticle remove to the base of each nail and rub in. Wait for a minute then using an orange wood stick, slowly push the skin back where it meets the nail. Use cuticle nippers to trim loose skin. Do not cut your toe flesh. Use an exfoliating body or foot scrub and a foot file or a wet pumice stone and remove the dead on the balls and heels of your feet. The idea is the smooth and not the remove. If your foot is turning bright red then stop. This means that you are scrubbing too hard.

Dry your feet thoroughly including between the toes and apply nourishing foot cream. Rub the feet and rehydrate cuticles by rubbing a little cuticle oil.

Use an acetone remover to get rid of the extra oils on the nails. Apply a thin base coat and using 3 strokes, one down the middle and one on each side. Do not paint cuticles. Apply 3 coats totally and then apply a thin topcoat. Use orangewood stick wrapped in cotton dipped in nail polish remover to remove excess nail polish.

Let your nails dry completely before you wear shoes.

When you take the time to indulge in giving yourself a full manicure or pedicure, it is essential to keep it simple. The following is a great system for creating the perfect manicure or pedicure at home:

  1. First, remove any previously applied nail polish. It doesn't matter whether you use a nail polish remover that contains acetone or not. It also doesn't matter whether the nail polish remover claims to contain moisturizing ingredients. If a nail-polish remover can remove nail polish it is going to be rough on your nails and cuticles, but that is the price of nicely painted nails. Use as little nail polish remover as necessary to remove the polish. Never soak the nail in it! Nail-polish remover is extremely drying on the entire nail area, especially the cuticle. Keeping contact with nail polish remover to a minimum is crucial for the well-being of the nail and cuticle.
  2. Before soaking your fingernails in water, either cut them or file them into shape. When fingernails are wet, they are more prone to damage then when they are dry. Gently file the nails into the shape you want, using the least-abrasive emery board you can find (avoid metal or extremely coarse files). Avoid shaping your nails into long talons or severe shapes (too square or pointy). Fingernails can be given a slightly rounded edge to protect the nail growth or a square appearance as long as it isn't too squared off. Quality nail files can be found in most major drugstores and don't have to cost a fortune.
  3. Soaking the cuticle is necessary if you plan to remove a bit of excess cuticle but over-soaking the nails can damage them, so immerse your nails in plain warm water for no more than three minutes. Avoid soapy or detergent-filled water, which only dries the skin and damages the cuticle. For your feet, because of the thickness of the toenails and their cuticles, the toenails can be immersed in water for a longer period of time. A warm soak feels wonderful and also helps soften the nail so it can be cut easier with a nail clipper.
  4. Trim toenails carefully using nail clippers. Nails are definitely easier to trim after bathing or soaking, but if you have soft nails cut them before you soak them to prevent tearing or damage to the nail. Toenails should be trimmed straight across, slightly above the quick. Avoid cutting them too short because doing so increases the chance of developing ingrown toenails.
  5. Moisturize cuticles with a very emollient, thick moisturizer. Almost any moisturizer or oil for dry skin will do. It is not necessary to purchase special cuticle creams: They contain absolutely nothing special for the nail or cuticle.
  6. Now is a great time for using a sugar scrub to massage your feet, legs, hands, and arms. Rinse your hands first and then take time to use a metal foot file or flat pumice stone to buff away calluses on the bottoms of your feet. Then rinse the scrub off your feet and legs.
  7. As an option, you can apply a specialized cuticle remover that actually dissolves excess cuticle skin. One of the more effective ones is Cuticle Eliminator ($3) available at some drugstores or beauty supply stores. Its high pH level is what makes it work so well, but that also means you don’t want to leave it on your skin for too long. Apply the Cuticle Eliminator lotion to the cuticle area and then proceed to step 8.
  8. Next, very, very gently, push the cuticle back away from the nail but avoid pushing it too far which can damage nail growth or fray the cuticles. Be careful not to pull, lift, tear, rip, force, or cut into the cuticle in any way. Trim only the free edge of your cuticles, avoiding the cuticle area next to the nail bed. Cutting too deep can eventually damage the nail.
  9. Before you polish your nails, it is essential to remove any remaining oil or moisturizer from them. Moisturizing ingredients of any kind left on the nail prevent polish from adhering to the nail. Use nail polish remover or plain alcohol just over the nail's surface to take off any moisturizer. Avoid getting nail polish remover on the cuticle; that's the area you want to keep the moisturizer on, but be thorough about the nail itself.
  10. Polish your nails in layers, allowing them to dry between coats. A minimum of four coats (base coat, two coats of color, and a top coat) is standard. If you have weak or brittle nails, place one or two coats of ridge-filling nail polish on the nail as the base coat; this is the best way to shore up the nail. Two coats of a colored nail polish are next, followed by a top coat to add shine and luster.
  11. Allow plenty of time for the polish to dry. Quick-dry polishes and some quick-dry top coats of polish often contain alcohol, which can cause the polish to peel and chip more easily, so you want to avoid those. Using a quick-dry oil or spray after you’re done polishing is a great way to ward off smudges, but these won't prevent nicks or dents in the polish, so be careful.
  12. Do not dry your nails with a blow dryer or any other heat source. Heat causes the polish to expand and lift away from the nail.
  13. Once the polish is dry, massage a rich emollient moisturizer or balm onto the cuticle area. This will help encourage healthy nail growth and protect the cuticle.
  14. Touching up polish every other day with a layer of top coat can help make a manicure last longer. Carry a bottle of top coat in your purse, and when you have a moment or break in your day, do a quick once-over. A single layer dries quickly and makes all the difference in keeping up appearances.
